Not every drywall surface requires the same finish. Understanding drywall finish levels can help owners and contractors select the appropriate finish for each area of a project.

Level 3 Drywall

Level 3 is commonly used where a heavier wall texture or similar finish will be applied. It generally isn't intended for smooth walls with standard paint finishes.

Level 4 Drywall

Level 4 is one of the most common finishes used in residential and commercial construction.

Joints, fasteners, and accessories receive additional finishing to create a surface suitable for many standard painted walls.

Level 5 Drywall

Level 5 adds a skim coat over the drywall surface to create a more uniform finish.

It may be specified for high-end interiors, smooth-wall applications, areas with critical lighting, or spaces where imperfections could be especially noticeable.

Which Finish Does Your Project Need?

The appropriate finish depends on the plans, specifications, lighting, paint, texture, and desired final appearance.
